Episode 339: Runaway Jury

It’s finale time for our coverage of John Grisham story adaptations this week and we end things on a high note with a film that most likely has more time spent in a courtroom than all others combined. Another great cast and intriguing case that is sadly still relevant today power this intriguing psychological drama and we hope that you enjoy our conversation all about it.

Episode 338: The Rainmaker

We move on to film number six in our coverage of John Grisham story adaptations this week and it’s among one of our host’s favorites. We both think Matt Damon does an excellent job of playing the typical young idealistic attorney protagonist and appreciate a straightforward story with a clear “good guy” and “bad guy”. It’s also nice to see some of a master director’s directorial touch, even if it’s pretty subtle. Enjoy the conversation.

Episode 337: The Chamber

Fifth in our John Grisham-verse coverage is one film that neither of us had ever seen before. Much like last week when we discussed “A Time To Kill”, an idealistic young attorney is searching for emotional appeals to prevent the execution of a client. While we thing this particular entry lacks in some of the directorial polish of previous entries, there is a fantastic performance and some very challenging things to think about, which made for a great conversation.

Episode 336: A Time to Kill

The fourth John Grisham film adaptation actually came from the author’s first novel. Why did it take longer to become a hit and get turned into a movie? We share our thoughts on that and discuss this complicated plot in-depth, as well as cheer the fact that finally one of Grisham’s attorneys gets to properly work in a courtroom.

Episode 335: The Client

In this, the third John Grisham film adaptation we’ve covered during our journey, we begin to see some patterns in the author’s storytelling style emerge. Sadly, this first of two Joel Schumacher directed entries was not our favorite, and is one of the rare times we can’t find a lot positive to say. But we try, and do have some moments to call out.

Episode 334: The Pelican Brief

Continuing our journey in the John Grisham Cinematic Universe, this week we discuss the author’s second film adaptation. There is decidedly less lawyering, but a lot more government conspiracy and it’s entirely relevant today.

Episode 333: The Firm

For the next couple of months we will be covering the movie adaptations of author John Grisham’s legal thrillers. With a who’s who of a cast and Oscar-winning filmmaker, this franchise-starter is a somewhat quieter take on the typical cinematic thriller, but one that puts intelligence and relatability above superhuman acts. Also note that this is one of Tom Cruise’s highest running distance totals of his filmography, so of course that means it’s great.
