Episode 335: The Client

In this, the third John Grisham film adaptation we’ve covered during our journey, we begin to see some patterns in the author’s storytelling style emerge. Sadly, this first of two Joel Schumacher directed entries was not our favorite, and is one of the rare times we can’t find a lot positive to say. But we try, and do have some moments to call out.

FF+ Fall/Day Shift

In this episode, a vampire hunting flick that might just be the perfect example of what Netflix needs to focus on and a single-location thriller that is sure to heighten your anxiety considerably.

FF+ Fire of Love/Inuh-Oh/Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist

I mix things up a bit in this episode and am joined by my friend Paul Keelan from Cinematic Underdogs Podcast to discuss one of our shared favorite films of the year – a documentary with a poetic approach to a scientific topic unlike anything you’d normally see. I also cover one of my most anticipated animated films of the year and share my thoughts on the first episode in Netflix’s second season of their Untold sports documentary series.

Inu-Oh – 1:07

Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist – 11:18

Fire of Love – 20:15

Episode 334: The Pelican Brief

Continuing our journey in the John Grisham Cinematic Universe, this week we discuss the author’s second film adaptation. There is decidedly less lawyering, but a lot more government conspiracy and it’s entirely relevant today.

FF+ Prey/Luck

The characters in one of these two films sure could do with a dose of the good stuff from the fantastical world of the other.

Luck – 0:44

Prey – 9:41

FF+ Bullet Train/The Territory

The tone of these two films could not be further apart. One is a vital documentary about an indigenous people facing genocide, and the other is the Ryan Reynolds-ification of Brad Pitt in what has become a very typical big, loud, quippy action-comedy formula.

The Territory – 0:40

Bullet Train – 10:49

Episode 333: The Firm

For the next couple of months we will be covering the movie adaptations of author John Grisham’s legal thrillers. With a who’s who of a cast and Oscar-winning filmmaker, this franchise-starter is a somewhat quieter take on the typical cinematic thriller, but one that puts intelligence and relatability above superhuman acts. Also note that this is one of Tom Cruise’s highest running distance totals of his filmography, so of course that means it’s great.

FF+ DC League of Super-Pets/Green Lantern: Beware My Power

In this episode, two different adventures featuring members of the Justice League. One of them involving pets and incredibly silly but hilarious good times, the other a much more serious feature with a superhero origin story and intergalactic war being juggled at the same time.

Green Lantern: Beware My Power – 0:48

DC League of Super-Pets – 10:27

FF+ Thirteen Lives/Vengeance

In this episode, a darkly comedic commentary on the identity of America as told through a murder mystery podcast creator’s experience in stereotypical Texas and a dramatization of the unbelievable real rescue of a Thai youth soccer team from flooding underground caves in 2018.

Vengeance – 1:37

Thirteen Lives – 9:17

Episode 332: Point Break

In the heat of the summer, we all wish that we could just drop what we’re doing and head to the beach. Unlike Bodhi and his gang, though, we probably can’t just casually rob 27 banks in 3 years to fund a year-round lifestyle of chasing the waves. We finally get around to a discussion about one of our seasonal favorites and also do quite a bit of comparing to the franchise-starting film of a beloved series to us. We also play a bit of a game at the end to determine what theme of films we’ll be covering the next month or so. Enjoy!
