Episode 337: The Chamber

Fifth in our John Grisham-verse coverage is one film that neither of us had ever seen before. Much like last week when we discussed “A Time To Kill”, an idealistic young attorney is searching for emotional appeals to prevent the execution of a client. While we thing this particular entry lacks in some of the directorial polish of previous entries, there is a fantastic performance and some very challenging things to think about, which made for a great conversation.

FF+ Three Thousand Years of Longing/Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul/Into the Deep

In this episode – a documentary about the NBA referee who got caught fixing games, a toothless and unsexy thriller about three characters stuck on a boat out to sea, and George Miller’s return to cinema with a fantastical modern-day tale of a lonely woman who finds a genie in a bottle.

Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul – 0:32

Into the Deep– 9:52

Three Thousand Years of Longing– 17:05

Episode 336: A Time to Kill

The fourth John Grisham film adaptation actually came from the author’s first novel. Why did it take longer to become a hit and get turned into a movie? We share our thoughts on that and discuss this complicated plot in-depth, as well as cheer the fact that finally one of Grisham’s attorneys gets to properly work in a courtroom.

Episode 335: The Client

In this, the third John Grisham film adaptation we’ve covered during our journey, we begin to see some patterns in the author’s storytelling style emerge. Sadly, this first of two Joel Schumacher directed entries was not our favorite, and is one of the rare times we can’t find a lot positive to say. But we try, and do have some moments to call out.

FF+ Fall/Day Shift

In this episode, a vampire hunting flick that might just be the perfect example of what Netflix needs to focus on and a single-location thriller that is sure to heighten your anxiety considerably.

Day Shift – 0:34

Fall – 9:29

FF+ Fire of Love/Inuh-Oh/Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist

I mix things up a bit in this episode and am joined by my friend Paul Keelan from Cinematic Underdogs Podcast to discuss one of our shared favorite films of the year – a documentary with a poetic approach to a scientific topic unlike anything you’d normally see. I also cover one of my most anticipated animated films of the year and share my thoughts on the first episode in Netflix’s second season of their Untold sports documentary series.

Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist – 11:18

Episode 334: The Pelican Brief

Continuing our journey in the John Grisham Cinematic Universe, this week we discuss the author’s second film adaptation. There is decidedly less lawyering, but a lot more government conspiracy and it’s entirely relevant today.

FF+ Prey/Luck

The characters in one of these two films sure could do with a dose of the good stuff from the fantastical world of the other.

Luck – 0:44

Prey – 9:41

FF+ Bullet Train/The Territory

The tone of these two films could not be further apart. One is a vital documentary about an indigenous people facing genocide, and the other is the Ryan Reynolds-ification of Brad Pitt in what has become a very typical big, loud, quippy action-comedy formula.

The Territory – 0:40

Bullet Train – 10:49
