Sadly, this first of two Joel Schumacher directed entries was not our favorite, and is one of the rare times we can’t find a lot positive to say. But we try, and do have some moments to call out.

The tone of these two films could not be further apart. One is a vital documentary about an indigenous people facing genocide, and the other is the Ryan Reynolds-ification of Brad Pitt in what has become a very typical big, loud, quippy action-comedy formula.

Episode 333: The Firm

For the next couple of months we will be covering the movie adaptations of author John Grisham’s legal thrillers. With a who’s who of a cast and Oscar-winning filmmaker, this franchise-starter is a somewhat quieter take on the typical cinematic thriller, but one that puts intelligence and relatability above superhuman acts. Also note that this is one of Tom Cruise’s highest running distance totals of his filmography, so of course that means it’s great.
