This novel turned Broadway musical turned film adaptation is an absolutely dazzling and emotionally stirring knockout. Its tremendous ensemble cast, dynamic direction, and musical numbers that soar tell a story not just about the awful human capacity to hurt each other but also for resilience, hope, support, and ultimately forgiveness. A bold retelling perfect for introducing a new generation to this powerful coming-of-age tale.

Delightful and delicious. While Chalamet’s singing isn’t up to par, he still embodies the whimsical nature of the famous candy creator. There’s so much joy and hilarity in this prequel and it feels like a perfect companion piece to Gene Wilder’s original.

FF+ Blue Beetle

The Blue Beetle is likely an unfamiliar comic book character to many, so it’s a shame that Jaime Reyes’ origin story didn’t dive more into the decades of mythology that exist. The film’s biggest strength lies in its depiction of Latino culture and its family dynamics, but it suffers from horribly uninteresting antagonists and a lack of creativity. It’s entertaining enough to give a positive review, just don’t expect this to stick with you very long.

Patrick is out on vacation this weekend but Meredith Loftus is filling on to discuss what made Barbenheimer such a phenomenon, what makes Greta Gerwig’s colorful satirical comedy so meaningful, and how unique and powerful of a biopic Christopher Nolan has crafted. It’s a celebration of great cinema, with a few criticisms here and there, and we hope you enjoy.

Episode 372: The Flash

Barry Allen misses his Mom, so he runs backward really fast and reverses time so that he can try and keep here alive in the present. Unsurprisingly, this timeline meddling causes lots of complications, among them Barry having to team up with an alternate version of himself and recruit a new squad of superheroes to help fight off the return of an old/alternate threat. There’s a big mess to unpack in this one, but we are up to the task and try to highlight the things we enjoyed as well being honest about the things we didn’t.
