FF+ Haunted Mansion/The First Slam Dunk

Disney has resurrected its ghosts once again for a new live-action cinematic story based on their famous attraction. This time around an unexpected group is locked inside the titular mansion together and must find a way past its creepy spectral inhabitants to get out, but there’s an undercurrent of dealing with personal grief, as well. Then we also have the anime adaptation of a sports drama manga that follows a HS basketball player over the course of a big playoff game as he struggles to lead his team to victory while remembering his tragic and complicated path to where he now stands.

Episode 377: Barbenheimer

The movie event of the summer is here and we couldn’t just choose one of these great films to discuss, so we’re talking about both! Patrick is out on vacation this weekend but Meredith Loftus is filling on to discuss what made Barbenheimer such a phenomenon, what makes Greta Gerwig’s colorful satirical comedy so meaningful, and how unique and powerful of a biopic Christopher Nolan has crafted. It’s a celebration of great cinema, with a few criticisms here and there, and we hope you enjoy.

Barbie – 13:56

Oppenheimer – 49:30

FF+ Oppenheimer/Barbie

The cinematic event of the summer is upon us with new films from beloved directors Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan. These two couldn’t be more different, but both have much to offer. While one is bright, colorful, hilarious, and heavy-handed but entertaining in its satire, the other is a challenging, long, and dense operatic biopic. Both are highly recommended for their strengths, but I do have notes.

Barbie – 0:53

Oppenheimer – 10:02

Episode 376: Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Rounding out three weeks in a row of mission madness, we dig into the newest entry in Tom Cruise’s blockbuster action spy series. Narratively, this time around we’ve got some notes, and overall feel it missed the depth that some of franchise’s most chilling human villains provided. But even with some issues, the spectacle in incredibly entertaining and the pacing absolutely perfect, resulting in such an exciting and fun experience that we can find ourselves able to forgive this for not quite reaching the Ethan Hunt Hall of Fame.

Episode 375: Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

Continuing our immersion in the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise over a few weeks, we have a conversation about the franchise’s sixth entry, one that shines for its overall balance of high quality elements. We talk about the addition of Ilsa Faust as a mysterious friend/foe and subtle love interest, how great of an antagonist Solomon Lane and The Syndicate are, and why Ethan’s relationship with his teammates will always make this series special. Plus more, of course, because there are always crazy stunts and intricate set pieces to ooh and aah over, as well.

Episode 374: Mission: Impossible

We’re going back to the beginning (of the movies at least) to start off three weeks of celebrating this outstanding spy series. Tom Cruise instantly becomes the iconic IMF agent Ethan Hunt, we learn about the power of masks, get to see exploding gum, and kick-off a world in which practically everyone goes rogue at some point. This is a very 90s and very De Palma entry in the franchise, but remains one of our most favorites.

Episode 373: Elemental

Pixar brought us one of their most adult films yet in this beautifully animated tale of anthropomorphic elements. There’s a lot going on, though, from a romantic comedy to an immigration allegory and more. We dig into our responses to this somewhat surprising entry from the studio and share what moved us and where we felt it fell a little short.
