Episode 370: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Our animated web slinger Miles Morales is back and this time he’s got a lot more friends, a new enemy, and some spider-frenemies too. We talk about our love for the animation, of course, how this story utilizes more of a dual protagonist structure, and the fantastic meta narrative about “canon”, among many other things (including a few nit picks). Dive into the Spider-Verse with us this week, and enjoy a great conversation.

Episode 369: You Hurt My Feelings

This week we enjoy taking a break from blockbusters to talk about how a 90-minute movie centered on exploring honesty in relationships could be so relatable, thought-provoking, and entertaining despite its seeming simplicity. We get into some personal examples, as well, so this is one of the episodes where you’ll get to know us better through the conversation.

Episode 368: Fast X

Family! Family, family, family… family; family? FAMMMMMMIIILLLLLLYYY. The family is in trouble because Dante Reyes is out for blood, but first he wants to cause them as much suffering as possible, which means we need even more family to come back so that they can be punished, too. This entry goes fully self-aware and asks us to laugh at it instead of just with it. We don’t exactly think it’s a good movie, but we both enjoyed our time in the theater and feel kind of conflicted about that. Listen in as we go through franchise burnout therapy.

Episode 367: The Spectacular Now

A largely underrated gem in A24’s catalog, this coming-of-age story is among the most natural we’ve ever seen, with an authenticity to its characters and dialogue that make it heartbreakingly and beautifully relatable. We chat about teenage alcoholism, keeping secrets from your children, and what it means to live in the moment, among other things, in this conversation.

Episode 366: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Our time with the Guardians of the Galaxy as we’ve known them for nearly ten years now is coming to an end. We get backstories, a rescue mission, lots of relationship closure, plenty of laughs, one exceptional action sequence, some fantastic needle drops, a strangely boring new future teammate, and a somewhat alarming amount of animal torture. James Gunn does his own thing, that’s for sure, for better and worse. Listen now for our thoughts!

Episode 365: Peter Pan & Wendy

David Lowery has a way with fantasy and imagery and for the second time he is adapting a Disney animated film into live-action, this time a much more well-known one. But does he bring enough creativity and imaginative vision to set this version apart from the man that came before? And why is Peter Pan only the third most interesting character in a movie whose title starts with his name? We dig into the new straight to Disney+ release and even debate that strategy along the way.

Episode 364: Ghosted

This blend of romantic comedy with an action-adventure spy romp works great, primarily because of the wonderful chemistry of its stars and a good dose of easy to digest fun that provides smiles and laughs without requiring you to think too hard. It feels like a throwback to an era we both remember fondly. We explain why and discuss what made us enjoy this one so much.

Episode 363: Air

This week we are joined by Paul Keelan and Jordan Puga from the Cinematic Underdogs Podcast to discuss Ben Affleck’s story of how Nike got into the basketball business by way of an industry-changing partnership with Michael Jordan. We questions whether this can even be considered a sports movie, talk about the romanticizing of big business, and give Mrs. Jordan her flowers for the critical role she played, plus much much more.

Episode 362: Bang the Drum Slowly

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recently chose this 1973 film as the best baseball movie ever in a blog post, and with it being the opening of MLB season and ourselves big fans of the sport, we decided to watch this new-to-us picture and see for ourselves. While we can’t get onboard with Kareem’s lofty praise, there is an interesting story with a beautiful central relationship and plenty to discuss.

We discuss the crazy story of how the rights to Tetris were won – leading to it being packaged with the Nintendo Gameboy and becoming one of the most impactful video games of all-time.
