Episode 127: Sunshine

Having already gone to the moon this month we are now taking a trip to the sun for our week three conversation in #SciFiSeptember. Sunshine, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, is frighteningly beautiful and contemplative in that way that the best sci-fi always is – giving us themes of spirituality, science, and humanity to consider while being thoroughly entertained in a tight, tense 100 minutes. All that makes for a fantastic conversation. We hope you enjoy this one as much as we did.

Episode 126: Primer

For week two of Sci-Fi September, we get deep… real deep. Primer is one of those time travel movies that demands multiple viewings just to understand, and we frame our discussion around the question of whether that’s actually a good thing or not. We also talk about some of the technical aspects of this low-budget cult classic and, of course, share our emotional responses to the story being told. We are 71.8% sure that our conversation will not require you to take Tylenol afterward, so tune in now!

Episode 125: Moon

It’s week one of Sci-Fi September and we are visiting base of Lunar Industries on the moon for this discussion about Duncan Jones’ debut film. Sam Rockwell’s incredible performance is just one of the many things to like about this gem and we give it plenty of love, but the big ideas to be considered provide us a lot of material for some great conversation, too.

Episode 124: The Departed

This week we wrap up our Director #BattleMonth with a bang, or a series of them. Actually, there are a whole lot of bangs. We discuss the fourth winner in our listener polls. Martin Scorsese’s fantastic Best Picture winner, The Departed.

Episode 123: Spirited Away

It’s week 3 of 4 in our Director #BattleMonth, and the listeners in our Facebook group chose Hayao Miyazaki’s anime masterpiece Spirited Away for us to cover. We dive into the mystical, magical world of soot sprites and water spirits and talking frogs as we attempt to make some sense of all the fantastical elements on display.

Episode 122: Seven Samurai

We discuss the second winner in our Director #BattleMonth bracket, Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 epic, Seven Samurai. This marks the first time we’ve covered a film as long as this one (nearly 3.5 hours) and also our first black & white foreign film.

Episode 121: Gladiator

This week marks the first conversation about one of our final four Director #BattleMonth winners. We were thrilled to see our listeners choose Ridley Scott’s 2000 Roman epic Gladiator and have an excellent discussion nailing down why we resonate with this story (and ones like it) so much.

Episode 120: Mission: Impossible – Fallout

We’re here to discuss one of our most anticipated films of the year, the newest entry in Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible series. This film is the first to serve as a direct sequel story-wise to one before it, and also the first to feature a returning director. I know that we both are huge fans of Christopher McQuarrie’s direction in Rogue Nation and couldn’t have been happier that he was coming back. But with all this hype, expectations were high. Did it deliver? Your mission, listeners, should you choose to accept it… is to stick around and find out what we thought, after we briefly the first five films, of course.

Episode 119: Life is Beautiful

This week officially kicks off what will hopefully be the first of many opportunities for our listeners to have a say in what we talk about on the show. We’re calling these our Premium Picks, where you can “sponsor” a film that you’d like to see covered. Meredith, one of our long time listeners, chose Life is Beautiful, and we have a conversation about this very unique Holocaust film from director, writer, and star Roberto Benigni.

Back on the show with us this week to discuss the over 3-hour long Director’s Cut of Wolfgang Petersen’s 2004 epic Greek tragedy Troy, is Andrew B. Dyce from Screenrant.com. We tackle this violent, emotional epic telling of a classic tale as thoroughly as possible, and we hope you enjoy.
