Episode 350: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

We promise to tell no lies during this conversation about Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion dark fantasy animated reimagining of the famous Pinocchio story. With incredible visual design and more mature themes, this transitions from a whimsical children’s tale into a story with much more serious elements, sometimes with mixed results, but is always magical and captivating.

Episode 348: She Said

For decades Harvey Weinstein committed sexual abuse in and out of the workplace and for decades he was able to silence those who dared to ever try and speak out. But the New York Times report by journalists Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor exposed these allegations and launched the #MeToo movement. We discuss why we think this dramatized story about their investigative work is strongly crafted and how important it is for this information to be shared with the world in a new format.

Episode 346: Ticket to Paradise

We chat about why this unexceptional throwback rom-com was so perfectly enjoyable for us, including what we think about its views on happiness and how it feels to relate to a genre in a different way than you once did before.

Episode 345: Barbarian

Genuinely surprising movies are not all that easy to come by, but this directorial debut tries something new and the result is a somewhat thrilling, somewhat campy, somewhat thought-provoking merger of horror comedy that is a blast to experience with others. We had a great time discussing our reactions to it and hope you enjoy listening.

Episode 344: Black Adam

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – a live-action DC comics film is dividing critics and audiences. After over a decade of wanting it, Dwayne Johnson finally steps into the suit of the titular anti-hero and delivers a fast-paced, high-energy origin story full of fun action set pieces and just enough emotional depth to get by. We had a blast watching this one on the big screen and are happy to discuss why we think that is, and hope those who are so quick to dismiss this style of comic book movie will reconsider.

Episode 343: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

Sometimes a movie comes along that just impacts you emotionally in a way that most don’t. It makes you laugh aloud and cry while leaving you with the feeling that you connected with its characters in a way that is lasting. This film is about a tiny sentient shell, with one big googly-eye, and shoes on, and it had that effect on us. We hope that you’ll enjoy listening to this conversation even half as much as we did having it.

Episode 342: 61*

To celebrate the recent record-breaking accomplishment of Yankee slugger Aaron Judge, we discuss a film that covers the great HR race of 1961 between two other Yankee sluggers which led to the very record that he broke. This is probably one of the best made-for-TV movies we’ve ever seen because it not only tells this dramatic story in an entertaining manner but highlights the human aspect of individuals, their team, and everyone covering the epic chase. Take a break from the playoffs for an hour and enjoy this conversation.
