Episode 392: The Boy and the Heron

Hayao Miyazaki returns, 10 years after his semi-autobiographical previous final feature which led him into a lengthy hiatus. In what many believed would now be Miyazaki’s new final film before retirement, the legendary animation director tackles blending the real life grief of a boy who loses his mother in World War II with a fantastical story about an artistic creator passing the torch. While ripe with stunning animation, a beautiful score, and pockets of creative and amusing fantasy elements, the story lacks cohesion and left us emotionally disconnected.

In the leadup to Hayao Miyazaki’s new final film, THE BOY AND THE HERON, making its North American premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, I’ve decided to re-watch all of the director’s filmography (directed and written by only, excluding short films and producer credits). In addition to just enjoying the delightful journey through 14 incredible films, I’m going to rank them for you here and talk through why each ones means something to me. I hope that you enjoy and maybe even are inspired to watch or re-watch some of the legendary animator’s incredible work.
