Episode 187: Friday Night Lights

This week we head back to West Texas to cover another film adapted Buzz Bissinger’s best-selling book “Friday Night Lights.” Unlike the rock-and-roll MTV version, this picture is more of a direct biopic. With Peter Berg at the helm, we can’t help but be drawn in emotionally to its raw depiction of life chasing High School football glory. Enjoy this conversation about one of our favorite sports movies ever.

Episode 186: My Neighbor Totoro

This week’s episode is all joy and smiles as we discuss a Studio Ghibli animated classic. It’s a film with innocence and purity that rarely exists, and is worth celebrating for the unique emotional response it creates in us.

Episode 185: The Wizard of Oz

September is officially upon us, but we haven’t forgotten about August just yet and specifically the donor pick selected by our awesome Patrons. The Wizard of Oz is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, just a couple of weeks ago in fact, and we are here to show it the love it deserves. Hop on the Yellow Brick road with us as we unpack this great American classic.

Episode 184: Varsity Blues

This week we enlist the help of listener J.B. Huffman to celebrate the start of football season by discussing one of our favorite movies featuring the sport, and our first of two episodes on films that adapted Buzz Bissinger’s best-selling book “Friday Night Lights.” There’s a lot more than just teenage antics going on in this film, and much of what it calls out about Texas HS football culture was ahead of its time.

Episode 183: Se7en

For our fourth and final film in this year’s Director Battle Month series, we dig into yet another dark and cynical crime thriller. As with No Country For Old Men last week, this film gives us a lot to chew on as the credits roll, and leaves a certain kind of feeling in the “Pitt” of your stomach.

Episode 182: No Country For Old Men

For our third film in this year’s Director Battle Month series, our Facebook group chose a Coen Bros. gem that many consider a masterpiece, but leaves others full of anger. We dig in to themes of choice and consequence, as well as chance and fate, for this neo-western conservation.

Episode 181: The Grand Budapest Hotel

This week’s second film in our 2019 Director Battle Month takes us on a fantastical adventure through the Republic of Zubrowka. We take some time out to marvel at the artistic genius of Wes Anderson before digging into the themes of the film that stem from the wonderful relationship between its two protagonists. Like the film itself, we hope this episode will largely make you smile, as our conversation did for us.
