Minisode 008: Hell or High Water

Aaron is joined by guest co-host Blake Collier to discuss 2016’s hit indie film Hell or High Water. With its West Texas setting capturing the atmosphere perfectly, expert acting, and tragically authentic story about brotherly love and the plight of poverty, this film is a modern western masterpiece. We have plenty of discussion material from a story rich in thematic depth and hope you enjoy the conversation.

Episode 035: Serenity

Gabriel Green of the Underrated Podcast joins us this week to talk about one of the best science fiction films ever made. There are many kinds of sci-fi, but no film has ever captured the same combination of action, ideas, and character depth as Serenity. Its mere existence is a testament to the brilliance of Joss Whedon’s Firefly universe, a world so beloved by fans that its story could not go unfinished. This is a masterstroke in storytelling that hits all of the right beats and is a must see for any movie lover.

Arrival

Podcast: Reel World Theology
Guest: Aaron
Synopsis: We get to talk about the most original sci-fi film we’ve seen this year. Not only do we all love original sci-fi, but this film gives us so much to discuss– which means it is doing exactly what we think good sci-fi should be doing. While the movie does not come out and make explicit arguments for these things, the film sparks conversations about free will, abortion, God’s perspective on time, and pain and suffering. I also mispronounce Villanueve’s name horribly!

Episode 034: The Prestige

This week we are covering one of our favorite films of all-time, Christopher Nolan’s magical masterpiece – The Prestige. It is a film we talk about often and yet it still feels full of untapped discussion potential. Yes, there is plenty of magic, but there is also a deep (and brilliantly acted) character study about obsession and the lengths some will go to win. Come listen as we break it down as best we can and try to do justice to a movie that provokes our thoughts and feelings, and is endlessly re-watchable.

Episode 033: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

This week we journey back into the wizarding world for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first film in a lengthy new series set in the USA. It’s impossible to discuss this film without talking about the expectations fans of Harry Potter go into the movie with. We also have a great conversation about the difference in writing a new screenplay and adapting an already completed novel. We may not have thought everything about this film was fantastic, but there is plenty to like and it was fun working our way through it.

Minisode 007: Arrival

In this minisode, we tackle the deep themes in Denis Villeneuve’s new science fiction masterpiece, Arrival. Based on a Ted Chiang short story called “Story of Your Life”, Arrival tells the story of an alien race who has landed on earth and humanity’s attempts to understand why. This is a movie that falls into the thinking science fiction genre and we have a great time feeling and thinking our way through it together.

Episode 032: Nerve

This week we cover one of 2016’s most underrated films, the rom-com thriller, Nerve. With surprisingly incredible visuals and soundtrack, plus a timely story about the dangers of placing your identity in social media approval, this movie delivers a great experience that is fun, funny, and sweet. It’s not just for young adults, and has a message worth hearing.

In this special bonus episode, Aaron brings in Chad Hopkins of The Cinescope Podcast to help explore the many dimensions of Doctor Strange. Are the visuals really that stunning? Yes. Yes, they are. But we also discuss the story, its villains, and even touch on the racism and whitewashing debate surrounding this Marvel film. Great conversation can be found within so grab your sling ring and come along for the ride.

Episode 031: Hacksaw Ridge

For this week’s episode we discuss Mel Gibson’s latest film, which is both powerful and important. Hacksaw Ridge had a huge emotional impact on us both and solidified its place among our favorites of the 2016. We talk in depth about how Desmond Doss’ story needed to be told and marvel at just how well everything in this film comes together. It’s a great conversation about sacrifice, conviction, and faith. We hope you’ll enjoy.

Episode 030: The Cabin in the Woods

This week we wrap up our trio of October-themed episodes with a cult classic and fan favorite, The Cabin in the Woods. This horror comedy by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard defies expectations and turns typical horror movie stereotypes upside down for one fun, crazy experience. It’s also surprisingly deep, and gives us plenty of heavy questions to discuss – like “Is its world worth saving?”
