FF+ Untouchable, Buffalo Boys & Captain Marvel Hype

In this week’s episode of FF+ we discuss two newly releasing films from first-time directors – a charming Indonesian action adventure Western and a documentary that explores the highly controversial topic of sexual crimes, from the perspective of both victims and convicted offenders, and offers an in-depth look at the legal and social system’s harsh treatment of sexual offenders in the U.S. We also discuss our expectations/hype level for Captain Marvel and lay out our plan for TV/series watching in 2019.

Episode 143: The Abyss

For the second week in a row we go underwater, this time to kick-off our Director Month series on the films of James Cameron. Much has been said about the production problems this film faced and we get into those, but also have a deep discussion about the incredible character development that drives this sci-fi thriller along. Don’t worry, we also have thoughts on the film’s controversial ending, too.

Episode 142: Aquaman

Hail to the King… of the box office, at least. James Wan’s undersea adventure fantasy film is earning gobs of cash and has enormous fan support for its unique and bombastic storytelling style. We have our good friend Andrew B. Dyce from ScreenRant.com join us once again to discuss the new DC Extended Universe entry while using as many water puns as we can fit in. An epic film deserves an epic conversation and we think this is one you’ll enjoy.

December and movie musicals go together like peanut butter and jelly. Did this long-awaited sequel satiate our hunger for enjoyable song and dance? We dig into Rob Marshall’s follow-up to the Disney classic and discuss one of our favorite topics, intertextuality, and whether MARY POPPINS RETURNS is really more of a sequel or remake.

Episode 140: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Let’s cut to the chase – this week we get to discuss our favorite animated film of 2018. Into the Spider-Verse isn’t just the ultimate Spider-man, it’s amazing, spectacular, and astonishing too, and provides us ample material to cover like sympathetic villains, the idea that everyone can be a superhero, and what a playground for telling diverse stories can look like going forward.

Episode 139: Mary Poppins

Listen to this podcast, step in time, it’ll be a good one, step in time. We dig into this classic Disney fable chock full of wisdom and magic as we prepare for its upcoming sequel by remembering just how wonderful the original is. A few things surprised us in our most recent viewings and it’s a good conversation around who this story is really about.

Episode 138: Green Book

This week we chat about one of the most expertly acted films of the year, the moving story of an unlikely friendship between Dr. Don Shirley, an accomplished classical piano player, and Tony Lip, an Italian bouncer who is enlisted to drive Shirley on a concert tour through the racially divided deep south. Though it may be easy to predict, the film is based on real-life events and the relationship between Shirley and Lip. Green Book has seen rave critical and audience response, but is not without its critics. We try to navigate the complicated material it covers in this latest conversation about a film that definitely makes us feel.
